My experience in Plymouth – Javier Segarra

After finishing my professional Management Database course in June 2015, I went to spend a nice quiet summer beach summer until it was a chance to start the trip abroad for two months. After the official IDEA return from vacation, we set to work to finalising the details of the project.

At the beginning of September, I did the interview with which soon would be my “manager”. The interview was in English through Skype.

The following month, in October, we started finishing the paperwork and I started to find the best way to get to my destination, Plymouth, which is in the south-west of England. I had to take a train from my village to Valencia, then a bus to Castellón airport where I boarded a plane to Bristol before getting a bus to Plymouth. This was simpler than my return journey but both were around twenty hours long.

During the previous weeks to before my journey, I prepared my cases and also researched which was the best phone company for 4G in the UK.

I arrived on 14th of October after a long and sad goodbye; I began my adventure to the island.

I arrived on the 15th of October at 6am after a long trip without any sleep. Later that day I visited the company where I would work in the coming months. My first impression was that I liked it because it was warm, and a small family business, so from the start I felt very good.

The first week was frantic and intense spent looking for all important places to my daily life, such as supermarkets, college, library, cafes. But undoubtedly the most important thing was to meet people to improve my English, and also to plan the weekend and take advantage of the experience.

My roommate, who was also a volunteer in the same company, was very cordial and friendly telling me about all the events that were held in the city for foreign people, like me, and indeed every week going to 3 events, Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

The next step to enjoy my experience, was to seek leisure activities nearby hiking, towns with tourist attractions, but the latter two were not what I expected, are not like towns and routes of Spain, there are entire neighbourhoods of houses and meadows, so that leaves little to the imagination, but in summer people go to the beaches.

In Plymouth there were several leisure activities to take part in such as karts, paintball, etc … but undoubtedly the most caught my attention was “Ice Hockey”, because in Valencia it is impossible to play, so every Monday and Wednesday I paid £6 to play for 90min, This to included the rental of the helmet, stick, gloves, and skates.

So six hours on weekdays working in the company and after a bit of hockey, the meetings and distance learning time passed quickly, so quickly that I had plans made that I could not finish

For me the best part of my experience has been the people in the company, the house and the friendliness of people and the patience of my friends.The negative parts for me was the limited time I had there, the how little historically interesting things I could find in Plymouth and the inability to get a good coffee any where.

Después de acabar mi curso profesional de Administración de Base de Datos en junio de 2015, me fui a pasar un bonito y tranquilo verano en la playa de verano hasta que llegase la oportunidad de comenzar el viaje al extranjero para 2 meses.Después de que el funcionario de IDEA volviese de vacaciones, nos pusimos manos a la obra, para terminar de cerrar todos los detalles de la “operación”.

Al principio de septiembre, hice la entrevista con la que próximamente iba a ser mi “manager”. La entrevista fue en inglés a través de Skype, que a parte de Hangout es la manera mas fácil y cómoda para realizar videoconferencias.

Al mes siguiente, en octubre, comenzamos a hacer todos los papeles y, yo comencéa buscar la mejor combinación de transporte para llegar a mi destino, Plymouth, que está en el sur-oeste de Inglaterra. Finalmente, tenia que coger un tren desde mi pueblo hasta Valencia, luego un bus hasta el famoso aeropuerto de Castellón, después, en Bristol, coger un bus que me llevaría hasta Plymouth, sin embargo, la da fue mas sencilla que la vuelta porque en esta tuve que coger un bus hasta Victoria Coach, otro bus hasta Stansted, el avión, otro bus desde Castellón hasta Valencia, y finalmente un tren de regreso a casa; ambos trayectos aproximadamente eran mínimo 20h.

Durante las semanas previas a comenzar mi viaje, me preparé la maleta y tambiénbusqué cual era la mejor compañia telefónica para poder tener 4G en UK.

Llegó el día 14 de octubre y tras una larga y triste despedida, comencé mi aventura hacia la isla.

Llegué el día 14 de octubre a las 6am, y después de tan largo viaje no conseguí dormir de tan cansado que estaba. Ese mismo día visité la empresa en la que iba a trabajar durante los proximos meses, y la primera impresión me gustó mucho porque era acogedora, y una empresa pequeña y familiar, así que desde el principio me sentí muy bien.

La primera semana fue frenética e intensa porque aproveche para conocer todos los lugares importantes para mi día a día, como los supermercados, la universidad, la biblioteca, cafeterías. Pero sin duda lo mas importante fue conocer gente para mejorar el ingles, y también para hacer planes el fin de semana y así aprovechar la experiencia.

Mi compañera de piso, que también era voluntaria en la misma empresa fue muy cordial y amable contándome todos los eventos que se hacían en la ciudad para gente extranjera, como yo, y efectivamente todas las semanas iba a 3 eventos, lunes, jueves y sábado.

El siguiente paso para disfrutar de mi experiencia, era buscar actividades de ocio, excursiones cercanas, pueblos con interés turístico, pero estas dos últimas no fueron lo que me esperaba, no son como los pueblos y rutas de España, allí todo son barrios de casas y prados, por lo que deja poco a la imaginación, sin embargo, en verano la gente va mucho a las playas.

En Plymouth, como actividades de ocio, habían varias como karts, paintball, etc… pero sin duda la que mas me llamó la atención fue “Hockey sobre hielo”, ya que en Valencia es mas que imposible jugar, así que todos los lunes y miércoles pagaba £6 para jugar durante 90min, precio bastante razonable por incluir el alquiler del casco, stick, los guantes, y obviamente, los patines.

Así que 6 horas de lunes a viernes trabajando en la empresa y después un poco de hockey, los meetings y mis estudios de Valencia que estaba cursando a distancia, el tiempo pasó rápidamente, tan rápidamente que se me quedaron cosas en el tintero por hacer, pero no tener coche y ademas que conduzcan por la izquierda limita mucho.

Lo positivo que me llevo es la gente de la empresa, los de casa y la amabilidad del resto por tener paciencia.

Lo peor que me llevo es el tiempo( aunque pasable), el poco patrimonio histórico que tienen y sin duda, lo peor de lo peor el café porque no había manera deencontrar un café agradable, ni en Starbucks.

Ah…y el sushi es carísimo!!!
